- I’ve been trying to teach my kids how to give a CRAAP (which is an acronym for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose) when it comes to online information. Evaluating resources and using critical thinking skills is so important, especially today with the blatant bias in news sources and all the online foreign trolls creating social media posts for people to blindly share. Just yesterday, my dad forwarded me this unbiased news site that simply reports the facts and I immediately subscribed.
- Some fun things that I’ve found online and plan on sharing with the kids include the comet NEOWISE which can be seen with the naked eye until mid-August, how trees secretly talk to each other in the forest, this new discovery regarding these crazy weird animals called caecilians (my kids were obsessed with them when we studied amphibians), a list of the top 8 longest highways that my dad recently shared with me, and this series of NOAA Live! webinars and a shark coloring book that my BFF sent me.
- Since the kids have been getting a copious amount of “Tech Time” these last few months due to COVID, I figure they might as well turn it into something productive. With encouragement and some help, the big kids started a couple YouTube channels that include unboxing and building LEGOs, stop motion, and more. Now they want to record gameplay, and I’m currently attempting to learn how exactly to do that. If you have any advice, feel free to share!
- We homeschool through a local charter school and some of our funds for next school year are now available to use for ordering curriculum and supplies. I like to refer to this blog post I wrote a couple months ago to help me remember what to get. Apparently perimenopause causes brain fog and mild memory loss, and that’s my current situation. Thank goodness for checklists and old blog posts. Also, if you are looking for reading resources for your struggling child, I recommend this post as well.
- If you’re new to homeschooling or just considering homeschooling next year because of the strict COVID guidelines for schools, don’t fret as I’ve got your back. Read these articles, Am I Even Fit to Homeschool My Kids? and Simple Homeschool Routine, to help you get started on the right track. And speaking of COVID, Quartz interviewed a variety of experts for their take on what they think the next 5 years will look like for their industry.
- If you’re a seasoned THF blog and newsletter reader, then you’ll know I’m trying to learn how to clean my home more efficiently. It’s really all about making various tasks a daily and weekly habit. That being said, deep cleaning is my least favorite task, but I plan on tackling my kitchen cabinets soon.
- Finally, if you’re looking to incorporate more nature into your homeschooling or classroom, you should consider registering for this weeklong online symposium with guest speaker, Richard Louv.
